Exploring Bosnia: A Journey Through Natural Beauty, Rich History, and Culinary Delights
Bosnia and Herzegovina, often overlooked by travelers, is a hidden gem in the heart of the Balkans. With its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, it’s no wonder I hold this country so close to my heart. As someone born in Sarajevo, Bosnia’s capital, the city has a very special place in my soul, but the entire country offers so much more to explore. From breathtaking hikes to delicious local food and historic landmarks, Bosnia is a country that promises an unforgettable experience. This is your guide to the best attractions, places to visit, and things to do in this captivating country. I landed in Bosnia after 10 years of not seeing my motherland. It was incredibly emotional. You can watch my video of my landing in Bosnia: HERE.
Sarajevo: My Heartbeat, My Hometown
Sarajevo, the capital city, is where my story begins. With its unique mix of Eastern and Western influences, this city is often referred to as the "Melting Pot of Europe" due to its rich multicultural heritage. For me, Sarajevo holds a personal and nostalgic charm that runs deep—its cobbled streets, old Ottoman-era architecture, and vibrant cafes are part of the fabric of my childhood. That slow and intentional living runs deep through my veins.
One of the best places to start exploring Sarajevo is Baščaršija, the historic Ottoman bazaar. Wandering through the narrow streets filled with local artisans, markets, and quaint coffee shops is an experience in itself. Don’t forget to stop at the famous Sebilj Fountain, a beautiful wooden structure that’s become a symbol of Sarajevo.
Another must-see in Sarajevo is the Latin Bridge, where the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand took place, marking the beginning of World War I. It’s a significant historical site, with the nearby museum offering insight into that fateful day in 1914.
